Turtle Nesting Expedition

Departure from Tamarindo

Turtle Nesting Expedition: with Expert Naturalist

What to Expect?

Join us on an unforgettable nighttime journey to Playa Nombre de Jesús, one of Central America’s premier nesting sites for sea turtles. For thousands of years, these ancient creatures have returned to this protected beach to lay their eggs, continuing a powerful cycle of life. Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s largest sea turtles, reaching up to 1,200 pounds and 8 feet in length, but they are also among the most endangered species.

Your turtle nesting Adventure Awaits

Guided by our knowledgeable expert naturalist, you’ll have the unique chance to observe turtles as they emerge from the ocean and make their way to the shore to lay between 80 to 150 eggs. Nesting season typically runs from October to April, with Playa Nombre de Jesús offering an ideal location to witness this rare and awe-inspiring event.

Perfect for family adventures, this expedition offers a memorable glimpse into Costa Rica’s vibrant wildlife and its commitment to conservation. Book today for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

What You’ll Experience

At 5:45 pm, you’ll meet our expert naturalist turtle guide at a designated pick-up point or directly at your hotel. Our comfortable transportation will take you approximately 40 minutes north of Tamarindo to a secluded turtle nesting beach. On the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into sea turtles’ behaviors, reproductive cycles, nesting habits, and diet.

Three unique turtle species inhabit the area: the Leatherback—the world’s largest turtle—as well as the Green sea turtle and the Olive Ridley. While we can’t predict exactly which species will be active during our visit, each offers a special glimpse into Costa Rica’s marine wildlife.

Throughout the tour, you’ll observe turtles in their natural nesting process, guided by our expert. Photography is permitted but only without flash, to ensure the turtles are undisturbed. You’ll have the chance to get close, yet touching the turtles is strictly prohibited to respect their natural space.

It’s important to note that turtle nesting depends on beach conditions, like clear sandbars and optimal temperatures, so sightings and egg-laying aren’t guaranteed. However, each night holds the possibility of witnessing a remarkable part of their lifecycle!
